To prevent widespread piracy of textbooks published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), the CBSE has directed teachers and students to check the piracy and make sure that authentic NCERT books are used in schools.
As part of affiliation by-laws of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the schools are required to follow NCERT text books from Class I to VIII “as far as practicable”, NCERT text books are also recommended for Classes IX to XII.
According to the council, all NCERT textbooks carry watermark of NCERT logo on several pages and consecutive eight pages have the watermarks on at least two pages anywhere in the text book.
The board has recommended buying of re-stitched and rebound books at extra cost be avoided and students, teachers and schools should demand books in original form as no bookseller is allowed to sale NCERT textbooks beyond the printed price, or to use sticker or rubber stamps for printing another price.
A complaint should be sent to NCERT in case pirated books are found or are sold at price more than the printed price.
NCERT has taken measures of punishing the guilty. Pirated books not only have inferior quality of pages, but may also not have authentic content, which may also affect the academic performance of students, said Vinay, a school teacher. “It is good that the council is taking measures to punish the guilty and all schools must make their teachers and students aware about checking piracy of textbooks,” he said. Piracy is widely prevalent everywhere, but it is unfortunate that even educational books have not been spared for greed. Awareness must be created to check such piracy amongst all, said Harnek Singh, a parent.
