Prof Kapil Kumar, Director of Delhi-based Indira Gandhi Centre for Freedom Struggle Studies, today stressed in-depth research on archived documents in the country.

Speaking at a seminar in Kurukshetra University, Kumar alleged since Independence a large section of historians had presented a distorted picture of Indian history, particularly the freedom struggle. History textbooks, Kumar said, were written to give a particular political colour.

During the freedom struggle of 1857, Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar was unanimously accepted as their leader by freedom fighters of various faiths, Kumar said.

He claimed women were accorded absolute freedom in the ancient period. The veil culture came into being after Afghan invaders started plundering India and targeting women, Kumar claimed.

Saying that the Ramayana was written by Balmiki in Sanskrit, Kumar advocated the use of Sanskrit by Hindus in all important religious and social functions.
