Five-day IBRO schools begins

Chandigarh: The International Brain Research Organisation (IBRO)-supported school on ‘Mitochondria and Neurodegeneration’ began at Panjab University on Monday. The five-day school is being organised by the PU Biochemistry Department and will provide theoretical and practical training to young researchers from Asia-Pacific region countries such as Iran, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Malaysia, Bhutan, Pakistan and India. Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, Vice-Chancellor Prof Raj Bahadur and Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover inaugurated the IBRO/APRC school 2015. Prof Rajat Sandhir, Dean Science Prof Naresh Tuli and a large number of teachers, research scholars, national and international delegates also participated in the inaugural ceremony. A demonstration on steriotaxic surgery and automated video tracking (ANY MAZE) software was showcased at the post-lunch workshop session of the International Brain Research Organisation (IBRO) school at Panjab University. Steriotaxic surgery is a method to target different parts of animal brain to give injections with the help of 3D co-ordinates in brain Atlus. Vineet Gopal demonstrated about the stereotaxic surgery. This surgery method is a unique approach to generate brain lesions, manipulation of gene expression and delivering experimental agents to the brain.

Northern region consultation

Panjab University will host the Northern Region Consultation for Third Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on October 28. The consultation is being organised by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in collaboration with the PU Centre for Human Rights and Duties at the Golden Jubilee Hall, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is an innovative process of the Human Rights Council. It involves a review of the human rights records of all 193 United Nations member states (countries) once every four-and-a-half years. The UPR provides an opportunity to each member of the UN to declare what actions they have taken to improve the human rights’ situation in their country.

Lecture on road safety

During the ongoing NSS special camp at the Post Graduate Government College for Girls Sector 42, Dr Akshat Mehta, Assistant Professor in Police Administration, Panjab University, Chandigarh, delivered a lecture on road safety.

Workshop on financial literacy

Mohali: The Quest Group of Institutions organised a workshop on financial literacy for students of MBA. The keynote speaker was Sukhdeep Singh, CEO, Innovative Financial Services. The workshop enlightened the students regarding the need and importance of saving and investment. It also enhanced their knowledge about various investment options and factors such as inflation and liquidity to be kept in mind while making investments. The speaker also suggested ways by which one could manage one’s savings by curtailing expenses. He motivated the students to understand Needs vs Wants with a focus on a long-term goal in life.

Patiala: Professor Gurmeet Singh Maan, Director Centre for Advanced Media Studies (CAMS), Punjabi University, Patiala, has been appointed member, Board of Studies of University School of Mass Communication of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi, and the School of Communication Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, by the Vice-Chancellors of the respective universities. Prof Maan, currently Chairman of the Board of Studies of the CAMS and member of Punjabi University’s Senate and Syndicate, has also been the member, Board of Studies of Communication Departments of Lovely Professional University and Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar.
