Grading under the remodelled Continuation and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) process for elementary school students is not going to be a cakewalk for both teachers and students.
For now, ‘formative and summative’ assessments will be taken into account and ‘portfolio’ of each student will have to be maintained.
Under the formative assessment, a teacher may take class tests, but within a stipulated time period. Well-designed and organised tests of 60 to 75 minutes will be conducted at a class level and marks will be recorded while the evidence of progress, assignments and other activities will be maintained in the form of ‘student portfolios’.
Every student will be required to do at least three assignments per subject in a term and the syllabus will be divided in two terms.
The ‘scholastic part’ of the students will be judged on domains like extraordinary achievements, interpersonal relationships, moral values, honesty, respect for national values, social adjustment, cleanliness and cultural aspects.
Under the summative assessment, the focus will be on avoiding role memory and some problem-solving questions, creative writing, picture reading, reasoning, one-word answers, fill in the blanks, jumbled sentences, diagrammatic representation, short answers and detailed answers will be included.
A school’s in-charge, principal, headmaster and central head teacher will ensure that all teachers maintain class/subject-wise record of each student in a proper way to record the achievements of the student in ‘self-made registers’ which will be accessed by inspection teams from time to time.
The learning gaps found in students will be addressed by the teachers by taking proper remedial measures as per specific needs and weightage will be given to both assessments while giving the grades.
Students scoring 80 to 100 per cent marks will get A Grade (outstanding), students with 65 to 79 per cent B Grade (very good), C Grade (good) will be given for score between 50 and 64 per cent while those scoring between 35 and 49 per cent will get D Grade (average). The students getting less than 35 per cent marks will be termed below average and given E Grade.
All schools affiliated to the Himachal Board of School Education will evaluate the students as per the new CCE guidelines.
