Horticulture varsity gets ICAR accreditation

The National Agricultural Education Accreditation Board of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has granted accreditation to Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, for five years.

The renewal of accreditation has come as a relief to students pursuing various courses as the university faced the threat of de-recognition.

The accreditation was granted to the university by the Board in its meeting held on March 16.

The Board has directed the administration of the university to conform to the Model Act of the ICAR, 2009, and ensure compliance of conditions like adequate faculty, student strength, hostel facility for students, construction of spacious classrooms to accommodate as many as 150 students and representation of students in various extra-curricular activities, including inter-university sports and cultural fests.

Dr Vijay Thakur, Vice-Chancellor, while confirming the development said the accreditation would help in obtaining budget from the ICAR and help rope in more research projects from reputed institutions.

He said an action taken report had also been sought by the ICAR and they were already in the process of fulfilling the laid conditions.

“The university students have already participated in various cultural fests and sports meet and the grant of Rs 1.5 crore financial aid from the Chief Minister will help in constructing six new classrooms with a capacity to accommodate around 150 students. Apart from this, three hostels will be ready by August and will provide accommodation to around 300 students,” he added.

He said the shortage of faculty was also addressed as per the requirements of the ICAR.
