The Department of Urdu, University of Jammu, organised an extension lecture on the topic “Present Scenario of Urdu in the world, particularly in Turki” at Prof Gian Chand Jain Seminar Hall of the Urdu Department today.
Prof Khwaja Ekram Ud Din of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, delivered a thought provoking lecture on the topic. The programme was presided over by Dean, Faculty of Arts, Prof Kedar Nath, while Prof Shohab Inayat Malik,Head of the Urdu Department, and Dr Reyaz Ahmed, Associate Professor, Urdu Department, also attended the lecture.
In his address, Prof Ekram said that according to the 2011 Census, Urdu was the fourth language which was spoken all over the world. Urdu is the mother tongue of the people of Mauritius. In Canada, two lakh people speak Urdu, he said.
Regarding Turki, he informed that in Turki, journalism was started by Urdu newspaper in 1880 namely ‘Pak-E-Islam’.
In his address, Prof Kedar Nath described Urdu as a link language and the cultural heritage of India.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Prof Shohab Inayat Malik introduced Prof Khwaja Ekram ud Din to the audience. He said five Urdu students of Istanbul University, Turki, were visiting the University of Jammu on September 19.
