Girl students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) in the state will learn self-defence techniques as recommended by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS). The training will include judo, karate, taekwondo and other innovative techniques of self-defence.
A sdource said a few years back mostly boys used to study in JNVs but the scenario had improved to some extent and parents now preferred to send their daughters for studying in JNVs.
“Yes, there has been a welcome change in the mindset of parents who are seeking admission for their daughters in JNVs, but the only concern is their safety, which is quite obvious. It has been felt that learning of self-defence skills is imperative for girls to defend themselves,” a source said.
“Principals will identify training resources or experts preferably from the recognised agencies or organisations. Female instructors may be appointed initially for three months and an honorarium of Rs 10,000 paid to the instructor from the Vikas Nidhi Fund of the vidyalaya,” the source said.
“Girl students will be divided into groups for training. One group will consist of seven to 10 girls,” the source added.
The source claimed that the NVS had given liberty to vidyalayas to add a few more areas, if any, for further strengthening the sports and self-defence programmes for the girl students keeping in mind the specific requirements.
When contacted, Sukhraj Kaur, Principal, JNV, Nud, said, “The NVS in its Perspective Academic Planning (PAP) 2016-17 has suggested various measures for the overall development of JNV students and self-defence training to girl students is one of them.”
