Following a complaint by a Class IX student of St John’s High School, Sector 26, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has rectified the errors pointed out in the Science Exemplar.
The reply received from the Grievance Redressal Cell, NCERT, states that the cell has been directed to refer to Sidh Goyal’s letter written to the Prime Minister.
“The department of education in science and mathematics at NCERT, New Delhi, has checked the errors in the Science Exemplar Problems for Class IX and rectified these,” read the letter.
“The PMO’s response is much beyond my expectation and has come as a pleasant surprise. It gives me a great sense of satisfaction that all errors I had pointed out have been accepted and rectified. I wish the NCERT reviews and makes all the textbooks error-free,” said Sidh on receiving the letter from PMO.
Notably, Sidh Goyal had spotted seven errors in the biology section of the Science Exemplar Problems. Taking a serious view of the errors, the boy had written a letter on June 22 to the PMO, the Human Resource Development Minister and the NCERT, seeking rectification of the same.
In his letter, Sidh had stated: “Lakhs of students all over India follow NCERT books religiously and blindly. We are in the formative years of our education. Wrong concepts and facts taught to us at this stage will have serious negative impact on our future education. We have to rely completely on NCERT books as schools are not allowed to prescribe books of private authors and publishers. Two years ago also, more than 100 corrections were carried out in NCERT’s biology textbooks after intervention of the media and the Punjab and Haryana High Court.”
The letter further stated, “The NCERT should get all the books thoroughly checked before releasing them.”
