The PSEB Class XII results have been bittersweet for the six meritorious schools of the state. Of the about 2,000 students who took the exam from these schools, only 23 have figured in the 341-strong provisional merit list.

In contrast, over 50 students of Teja Singh Sutantar Memorial School, Ludhiana, a private school, have bagged positions in the merit list. This is more than all merit schools combined. Notably, all students of the school are from poor families.

Education Minister Dr Daljit Singh Cheema has sought a detailed analysis of the result of all meritorious schools by Monday morning.

While five meritorious schools produced toppers in the merit list (one school merely one), the sixth -– the school at Amritsar — could not produce even a single topper.

Of the total positions, Jalandhar and Bathinda merit schools led the pack with eight toppers each. These were followed by Ludhiana with four in the merit list, SAS Nagar two and Patiala one.

The positions bagged by meritorious school students on the merit list include 12th, 14th, 16th to 22nd.

While Ludhiana students got 12th, 16th, 17th and 20th positions; Jalandhar students got 14th, 17th, 18th (two students), 19th, 21st and 22nd (two students) positions.

Bathinda students have got 16th, 17th, 19th (three students), 20th and 22nd (two students) positions. SAS Nagar got two positions (both on 20th position) and Patiala one (22nd) in the state merit. Amritsar drew a blank.

In the total merit list of 341, government schools students have been able to bag only 76 positions and meritorious schools 23 positions. The rest have been bagged by students of private and aided schools.

Principal KK Aery of Meritorious School, Jalandhar said, “I am happy with the results in terms of the proportion of students, but clearly, we shall have to aim higher when it comes to merit.”
