Chandigarh, January 3
A 2 per cent fee hike for all types of hostels in Panjab University is proposed to be implemented from the next semester. The special committee, constituted to review the fee structure of the hostel, decided today that from the next session, the students will have to pay their fee semester-wise.
At present, the students are paying their hostel fee on a monthly or annual basis. The committee which is headed by Prof Navdeep Goyal, at a meeting today, discussed the fee structure and international and working women’s hostels. The final draft of the hostel fee hike will be sent to the Syndicate meeting, scheduled for January 15, for approval.
In all the hostels, the committee has created a development fund. The fee will vary according to the facilities of the premises.
Dean, Students Welfare, Emanual Nahar said, “A major problem which the authorities are facing is the repair work in all the hostels. There is no separate fund available for it. Keeping this in view, development fund for a normal hostel has been fixed at Rs 750 per semester, for international hostel Rs 2,500 per annum and for foreign students Rs 5,000.”
The committee proposed that the fee will be deposited in two instalments. The first instalment is for July to December and the second for January to June. It was also decided that the research scholars’ semester will be counted from the day of their enrolment with the department. The committee has not proposed any changes in the fine for various violations in the hostels.
In the meeting, the Panjab University Campus Student Council proposed to bring online allotment of hostel seats for transparency.
