Chandigarh, June 14

Sanskrit is not a language meant only for rituals and marriages. The language has a universal scope and its range spreads across subjects as diverse as mathematics, engineering, astronomy, physics, social sciences, philosophy, psychology, claims Udyan Arya, chairman of the Sanskrit Academy Chandigarh.

Arya was addressing a gathering on the concluding day of the 14-day “Sanskrit Shloka Chanting Camp” organised by Sanskrit Academy, Chandigarh, at DAV School, Sector 15, here.

Participants were taught the basics of Sanskrit and they were trained to chant shlokas from the Bhagavad Gita, Nitishatakam and Upanishads at the camp.

The chief guest on the occasion, Amrit Sagar, Regional Organising Secretary of Sahkar Bharti, said: “Most of the attendants are women. Sanskrit not only gives knowledge, but it also gives values. Values are very important because it is values that build the character”.

He said: “Sanskrit is a unique language as it stresses on character building. It teaches about what our duties are, not merely what our rights are. These days, people only talk of their rights. No one talks about duties. Sanskrit inculcates the culture of duties first and then rights”.

Maneesha Saggi, Simran, Sashi Gupta, Anju Anand, Kashish Anand and others chanted shlokas from the Geeta.
