SPIC MACAY Dehradun has, for the first time, conducted a Baul music lecture-demonstration series by Parvathy Baul for the students of Dehradun. Parvathy Baul is known as the ‘Bard of Baul’. Her music is the melody of mendicants.

Parvathy performed at State Forest Service College, The Asian School, National Institue for Visually Handicapped and KV Birpur during her performances in the past two days.

Parvathy Baul begins her recital with a prayer to her masters and goes on to weave magic among the audience through her repertoires with rich metaphysical connotations.

She plays the ektara or the ekatantri veena which has references in Samaveda. It symbolises the oneness of mankind with the universe. It is carved out of magnolia wood specially by her husband Ravi. The duggi, a small drum fastened to her waist, and the tinkling chilambus on her feet and her matted locks add beauty to the mystic aura of the artiste.

Parvathy with her her full-throated voice along with powerful swirls sings in gay abandon.

Each Baul repertoire performed by her is a mahamantra.

The Baul Masters are known as nadaupasaks. They write these poems when they are in communion with the divine.

Parvathy enthralled the students of Dehradun with her mystic art form.
