Due to the regular power cuts at Punjab Agricultural University campus during midterm examination, students residing in hostels of the varsity demanded that authorities should install generator sets in hostels. Students alleged that they face shortage of electricity every time during examinations. The power was snapped from evening to late night on Thursday and Wednesday.
However, the university authorities claimed that the power was off due to technical problem but students alleged that such technical issues are regular.
It is worth mentioning here that the PAU authorities claimed that PAU campus has been connected with hot line of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL). Despite having the hot line the power cut is a regular feature on the campus.
Karanvir Singh Sandhu, a student representative said, “Despite the campus is connected with hot line we face regular power cuts. The problem increases during summers and especially monsoon. The hostel inmates have no option to prepare for examination without power. The university authorities should install generator sets for alternative arrangements during power cuts”.
“Students are ready to bear the expenses of fuel and maintenance. The authorities have to install the generators or connect the hostels with the generator,” he added.
There are four hostels for boys, one hostel for international students and three hostels for girls in the PAU campus.
“The authorities have to address this problem on priority because our study suffers. The hostels should be connected with the generators at academic block which can be used for hostels after college hours,” said Mandeep.
Comparison with GADVASU hostels
The hostel inmates at the PAU often compare the facilities available at PAU hostels with hostels of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), on same campus. Hostels of PAU and GADVASU are located in same area of the campus. The hostellers at GADVASU enjoy modern facilities such as geezers and power backup and PAU hostellers feel deprived.
