Chandigarh, December 30
Panjab University will introduce a five-year integrated life sciences and education course from the next academic session. The announcement in this regard will be made during the visit of the Nobel laureate and the president of the Royal Society, Prof Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, to the PU. He will visit the varsity on January 5 to deliver the INST-PSCST Hargobind Khorana and DST Inspire Inaugural Lecture. PU Vice-Chancellor Arun Kumar Grover disclosed this today.
He said under the course, science students would be given training for the first two years and then a specialised field could be chosen by them.
The VC said he wanted to develop the south campus of the university as a PU institute of life sciences where all science departments would be located. He proposed to develop two new blocks for the pharmacy department there. Grover said Prof Ramakrishnan would be in the city from January 3 to 6. During the four days visit, he would deliver a series of lectures at Mohali and Chandigarh.
Prof Venkatraman will address students of the Inspire camp on the topic “Antibiotics and the Cell’s Protein Factory” at the IISER, Mohali, on January 4. On the same day, he would deliver the Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Medal Lecture. The lecture is being organised by the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, at the IISER, Mohali.
