“The students generally tend to miss the first day of the school after holidays. So, it was expected,” a government primary schoolteacher said.

However, attendance at senior secondary and high schools remained normal. Kusum Lata, principal, Government High School, Sarabha Nagar, said the attendance at the school was good. “Even I was surprised at the good attendance at the school, on the first day after the holidays.”

Meanwhile, college students said they exchanged New Year greetings during the day. “We had exchanged greetings with friends, but today was the first day of this year when we met our classmates and teachers. So rather than studies, it was more of a New Year greeting exchange day,” Harpreet, a BA student said.
