Extra classes for students of Classes IX and X, who are weak in mathematics and science, started in government schools today.
The classes, termed as ‘remedial coaching’ for ‘slow learners’, are being held after school hours. These would continue till February 28.
“An hour-long class for mathematics and science has been started to help the students gain better understanding of the concepts in the syllabi of the two subjects,” said Sanjiv Thapar, Principal, Government Senior Secondary Model School, PAU.
Weak students were identified on the basis of their performance in the last examinations. In most schools, approximately 20 per cent of the students have been shortlisted for the remedial coaching classes.
In the middle of the coaching classes by the end of this month, a test would be conducted to check the progress of the students.
“In fact, not only weaker students, but brilliant students sometimes also stay back to attend these extra classes,” Thapar said.
“The classes were held last year also and it does help weak students. Such classes have helped in improving the school results as well,” said a school teacher.
“I think it is a good initiative. Though teachers are there for help during the school hours, the extra classes will hopefully help me in getting better marks in mathematics,” said a Class X student.
