Panjab University has granted a special chance to those undergraduate and postgraduation students who failed to clear their compartment, re-appear and improvement exam. The last date for the submission of forms is March 31 and the exam will be held in June this year. The fee for the special chance will be Rs 10,000 for postgraduate students and Rs 5,000 undergraduate students. The SC and ST candidates will be given 50 per cent concession in the examination fee.

Honour

Dr Satish Kumar, a 1980-batch PEC alumnus who was awarded the Padma Shri at the Republic Day parade this year, was felicitated at the PEC, Chandigarh. PEC Director Manoj K Arora presented a citation to him. In his address, he remembered his days at the institute. He quoted Darwin and said, “It will not be the strongest who will survive but the one who is adaptable to change is likely to succeed”.

PU Prof awarded

Chitkara University, Punjab, honoured Prof Bhupinder Singh Bhoop from the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab University, Chandigarh, for his contribution to research and academics. The award was presented to him on February 26 during a two-day symposium on pharma innovation at the varsity.

Workshop

The botany department of the MCM DAV College for Women,Sector 36, organised a workshop on the safety and health in working environment as per the UGC directives. Dr Prince Sharma, Professor, department of microbiology, Panjab University, conducted the workshop. The aim of the workshop was to spread awareness on the issue among students under the the Occupational Safety and Health Administration programme.

Demonstration by scientist

During the seven-day workshop organised at the Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 11, Chandigarh, on the topic “Spectrum of Knowledge: An Interdisciplinary Approach”, a demonstration by eminent scientist Prof Anil Kumar from the IIT Mumbai on the topic “Magic and Science: Art of Active Learning, was held. He explained phenomenon of illusion by giving different examples. The workshop was attended by 150 students, along with 70 faculty members.

Declamation contest

The department of Sanskrit, Panjab University, on Tuesday organised an inter-university declamation contest-cum-annual function. Various competitions were held and experts shared their views on Sanskrit in the contemporary era. The function was presided over by renowned Sanskrit scholar Prof Ramakant Angirasa. Prof Vikram Kumar was the chief guest on the occasion.

CCET employees’ strike continues

The chain hunger strike by employees of the Chandigarh College of Engineering (CCET), Sector 26, entered its 15th day on Tuesday. They are demanding reinstatement of five assistant professors. Rajkumar (electrical department) Subramanyam (mechanical wing ) and Hanuman Parsad (education department ) sat on the strike today. Meanwhile, Rakesh Kumar, convener of the co-ordination committee of the employees, said a delegation of the employees met Vikram Dutt, Secretary, technical Education, and apprised him of the issue. Dutt assured the employees to sort out the issue soon. — TNS
