CBSE stated that a special educator is required in schools to work with children and young adults who require additional support in order to complete their learning successfully.

These teachers will help children with physical disabilities, sensory impairments and disabilities such as autism, mental retardation, cerebral palsy and specific learning disabilities.

Because these children are emotionally vulnerable and have behavioral difficulties, they need additional support, care and understanding teachers. The board has mentioned that it is mandatory for schools to appoint special educators in all schools to ensure effective and meaningful inclusion of children with disabilities in schools.

The board had also sent a circular regarding the formation of the special committees that would include school counsellor, special educators, teachers representative and principal of the school for not only ensuring the admission of such children to schools.

If any such student is there in schools, they must be identified and these committees must ensure their active participation in schools. These committees are also expected to promote inclusive education at school level and neighbourhood apart from addressing the issues related to admission, curriculum transaction, exemption in examination and all other issues to safeguard the interest of children with special needs.

Barring a few, most schools lack special educators

Dr Neelam Sodhi, from Ashirwad, an NGO said though there is are not enough qualified special educators, but if schools start following the instructions of the board and hire special educators, more persons would start going in for these courses in special education.
