Students bag laurels

Ludhiana: Twenty six students of MA (Economics), third semester, SCD Government College, have secured 70 per cent and above in the results announced by Panjab University on March 17. Jasneet Kaur secured first position in the University by securing 79 per cent marks. Prabjot Kaur secured fourth position with 75.5 per cent marks. Principal Dharam Singh Sandhu congratulated the students.

SEMINAR HELD

The department of economics and business administration of SDP College organised a seminar on the topic “Business Issues of Indian Economy”. Dr Ashwani Bhalla, professor, department of commerce, SCD Government College, was the keynote speaker. Dr Bhalla said India’s dream of becoming a super power could be materialised only if we empower our youth with interpersonal skills, business etiquettes and certain behavioral traits such as attitude, motivation and time management among other things. He said all this was possible if the universities introduce skill-oriented courses and educational institutions create conducive environment for the implementation of these courses. He said Indian youth constitutes 28 per cent of its population. We have to strengthen, mould and mobilise youthful energies creating opportunities to express intellect, otherwise it could prove disastrous.

POSTER-PRESENTATION

A poster-presentation was held at Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women by the Post-Graduate Department of English on the topic of ‘British Poetry’. Major works of WB Yeats, TS Eliot, WH Auden and Ted Hughes were displayed. All students of MA-English, semester-2, participated enthusiastically in the activity. Students got firsthand experience of making posters, which exhibited their creativity. Principal Harminder Kaur graced the occasion. She applauded the efforts put in by students and also encouraged students and faculty to arrange such activities so that they could be prepared to face the challenges of modern techniques in education.

FAREWELL PARTY

Students of arts faculty organised a farewell party for their seniors at Bharti Auditorium of Arya College. Seniors gave a rocking performance during modelling competition. Karan was adjudged Mr. Farewell and Bhuvnesh and Gurwin Singh Chugh were the first and second runners-up. Principal Dr RC Tejpal presided over the function. Wishing good luck to students of final year, he said a new phase of life was waiting for them, outside the college. Programme conveners Prof Anil Trikha and Dr VB Sudhir said the college time was the basis of human life. Prof Kumud Chawla and Prof Anuradha were the judges.

SENIORS GIVEN A WARM SEND-OFF

Students of the department of computer science and applications at Ramgarhia Girls College arranged a fun-filled and dazzling farewell party for their seniors to bid them adieu. Ranjodh Singh, president, Ramgarhia Educational Council, and his better half, Rajinder Kaur, commercial director, GS Radiators, presided over the event as chief guests. Manjit Singh MSSS chief patron Ramgarhia Educational Council and former principal of the college Dr (Mrs) Narinder Sandhu were the guests of honour for the day. Principal Dr Inderjit Kaur extended them a hearty welcome. An array of cultural items presented by the students added sparkle to the event. Ruchika was crowned Miss Farewell and Gagandeep Kaur and Jugwinder Kaur were adjudged the first and second runners-up, respectively.

Sanskrit Society

Sanskrit Department, Government College for Girls, organised Sanskrit Society which was presided over by vice-principal Krishan Singh. Dr. Vikram Kumar, retired professor of Sanskrit, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was the chief guest. He presented his lecture on the topic ‘Relevance of Sanskrit Language in Modern Era’. He said Sanskrit is the mother of all languages. Ved-Vedang Upanishads were written in Sanskrit. Epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata and Darshan Shaster Pauranik - Shastra, Ayer Veda, Netya-Shastra and Kavya Shastra were written in Sanskrit. Western scholars also contributed their lot in the development of this language. Sanskrit is the only language in which each phonetics has its expression. We can pronounce each sound. In this language we can read as we write and we can write as we read. He also appreciated role of women for their contribution to preserve our Sanskrit language and culture as well. The speaker explained that Sanskrit is absolutely, systematic, logical and scientific language. Dr Pawan Kumar, Head, Sanskrit Department, also expressed his views on the topic. He presented a vote of thanks to Vikram Kumar.

Visit to old-age home

In order to sensitise the students about the problems affecting our society particularly the elderly people, the department of sociology, GTB National College, Dakha, under the guidance of principal Guriqbal Singh arranged an educational visit to Vivekananda Old Age Home, Model Town Extension, Ludhiana. The tour was led by professor Sarita and 35 students of the department visited the old age home. —TNS
