Nearly 100 students from 25 schools in the district participated in the contest.

Safe Drive Stay Alive, an NGO, had organised the competition. “The competition gave an opportunity to students to showcase their creativity and imagination. Apart from showcasing their understanding and learning about road-safety rules, students provided solutions to resolve traffic problems,” said one of teachers of the school.

“The motive behind organising this competition was to instill a sense of road safety among students and sensitise them about this important issue,” said Naval Kishor Kaura, NGO president.

“This event will be organised annually by the NGO now to create awareness about traffic safety among students,” he said.

“Every year, over 1.5 lakh lives are lost in the country due to accidents and several lakh people are injured. This underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for awareness and strict observance of traffic rules,” he said. He told students about the issue of underage driving, adding that he would write to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to expedite the amendment in the Motor Vehicles Act.

Harinderjit Singh, ADCP Traffic, was the chief guest. He along with ASI Jagdev Singh encouraged students to have a sound traffic sense.

Nikhil Chowdhary of BVM School, Kitchlu Nagar, bagged the first prize. Gauri Verma of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, came second, while Isha Jaiswal of DAV Public School, Pakhowal Road, came third. The consolation prize winners were Mudita Jain and Ryna Kalra of Satpaul Mittal School, Mehak Sharma of International Public Senior Secondary School, Khushi Jain of DAV Public School, BRS Nagar, and Harshil Arora of Saraswati Modern Senior Secondary School.

Principal Dr Anu Verma congratulated the winners and advised students to prefer riding bicycles instead of driving motor vehicles.
