The National Students Union of India (NSUI) and the National Panthers Student Union today held demonstrations against the state Public Service Commission (PSC) for allegedly ignoring the “sensitive” issue of date clash of two exams on March 19.

Chanting slogans against the PSC and the state government, the protesters burnt an effigy of the PSC chairman and accused him of showing “dictatorial attitude” to allegedly spoil the future of the youth.

The PSC has made it clear that there was no change in the schedule of the Combined Competitive (Preliminary)-2016 (KAS prelims) and it will be held as per the schedule on March 19, 2017. On this day, the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is also scheduled to hold a Combined Graduate-Level examination-2016 (TIER-III). Student groups have been demanding the postponement of the KAS prelims.

“The state government is playing with the students of the state. It is a shame that the two exams are going to be conducted on the same day. Instead of resolving the issue, the PSC has turned it into a “prestige issue”. It is matter of grave concern and the government should not put the career of educated students in jeopardy,” Neeraj Kundan, NSUI state president, said while addressing the activists outside the University of Jammu here.

He asked, “How could the administration expect a candidate to appear in two different examinations at the same point of time? We request the Governor of the state to personally look into the issue and direct the authorities concerned for deferring the exam date to save the aspirants from the inconvenience.”

Similarly, the NPSU activists, led by state president Thakur Virender Singh, also gathered outside the campus of the Jammu University and raised slogans against the PSC and the state government.

Requesting the legislators, irrespective of their political affiliations, to come forward, the NPSU leader demanded sacking of the PSC chairman.

When contacted, Shakeel-ul-Rehman, Controller of Examinations, PSC, said they could not change the date because all arrangements had already been made for the exam. “There are only 44 candidates for the SSC exam. Moreover, there are no centres for the exam in Jammu and Srinagar. Of the 44 candidates, only 10-15 are protesting while the rest of them have no problem,” he said.

103 observers appointed for KAS examination

Jammu: The state government on Wednesday appointed 103 observers for the smooth conduct of Combined Competitive (Preliminary) Examination, 2016, on March 19. According to an order issued by the government, as many as 40 observers were appointed for examination centres to be set up in Srinagar, the summer capital of the state, while the number of observers being appointed for centres in the Jammu region is 63. The exact deployment of the officers will be made by the J&K Public Service Commission. The state Public Service Commission (PSC) has said a total of 47,010 candidates are set to appear in the Combined Services Preliminary Examination, commonly called as KAS Prelim exam, this weekend. This time examination centres have also been created at Anantnag, Baramulla, Doda, Rajouri, Leh and Kargil that will enable candidates from far-flung areas to participate in the examination without any inconvenience. — TNS
