All major student organisations at Panjab University staged protests at the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) and the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) over different issues.
Notably, as both departments have the highest number of voters for the university student council elections, the protests were an attempt to showcase their strength rather taking up genuine issues of students. As per record, there are around 2,600 voters at the UIET and 2,100 at the UILS.
While protesting at the UIET, supporters of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) demanded a special chance for students. They said after 2012, the department did not offer a special chance to students.
Meanwhile, the Student Organisation of India (SOI) raised the issue of dirty washrooms, water coolers and canteen. The student parties also staged a protest at the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) by blocking the entry of the department. They did not leave the department till the meeting between the UILS Chairman and students to resolve the issues was not over.
The students were demanding the replacement of the mid-term evaluation with the previous method besides a change in timings of the department.
A committee was constituted to look into the issue of mid-term evaluation while timings of the department will remain as it is due to rules of the Bar Council of India.
