Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh and SGPC officials today released the Nanakshahi calendar 2017-2018 here today.

This is an amended version of the original Nanakshahi calendar that was introduced in 2003 and was later amended in 2010 and was christened as Bikrami calendar. However, the SGPC did not acknowledge it as Bikrami Calendar.

The calendar has been controversial among the Sikh community as the same events related to Sikh gurus were observed even twice a year.

On the occasion, the Jathedar appealed to the community to observe this calendar only. He also urged Sikh bodies to follow the latest version to give a message of unity. When asked about the confusion and the scope of further amendment in the calendar, he said that no suggestions were received till date at the Akal Takht.

“This Nanakshahi Samat 549 calendar has mentioned gurpurb dates as per Gurbani and historic sources. The Sikhs should follow this as it will lead to unity among the community,” he said.
