A 15-year-old boy collapsed and died at a swimming pool at Phase VI here this morning.

The deceased, Piyush Malik, a resident of Sector 41, Chandigarh, had come to the pool around 7 am along with his father, RS Malik, and sister to learn swimming. Sources said he was standing on the edge of the pool after coming out of the water when he collapsed all of a sudden and fell into the pool (around 4 ft deep at that spot).

His father, who was swimming nearby, pulled him out of the water. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The victim, along with his family members, had joined the pool four days ago to learn swimming.

The victim’s father, who hails from Hisar, refused to get a postmortem conducted. He took permission in this regard from Mohali SDM Lakhmir Singh. The police said the family termed the death an accident. “They (the family) did not want any action in the matter,” said the police. The pool belongs to GMADA and has been given to a private contractor.
