Two cars caught fire at a workshop in the Phase IX Industrial Area here today.

Of the two vehicles, which got damaged, one was a Skoda Octavia.

The Skoda owner, Col Gulshan Sharma, said he had come on leave and was going back to Udhampur, where he was posted. Soon after he moved out from the Silver City, Zirakpur, he noticed that the pickup of the car was not normal. On the way, he decided to get the vehicle checked.

When he parked his car at the workshop, some smoke was seen coming out of the bonnet. Soon after, smoke was also seen coming out from the rear of the vehicle.

He was going to Udhampur with his wife and domestic help. All three came out of the car when the smoke was seen. However, in no time the vehicle was in flames.

Colonel Sharma said since he was going to Udhampur, he had got the tank filled to capacity with petrol. The flames also engulfed another car which had come to the workshop for repairs.

He said he failed to understand what went wrong with the car.

The fire brigade was informed but by the time a fire engine reached the spot, his car was badly damaged.
