Of the 51 orphans residing at the Mission for the Desperate and Destitute (MDD) Bal Bhawan at Phoosgarh here, 35 have been verified by the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM), tehsildar, Patwari and other officials for the issuance of birth certificates.
After verification, their files have also been sent to the Civil Surgeon’s office for further process.
For the rest of the 16 orphans, who are here from other districts, the authorities have written to the administrations concerned for their verification. It seems that orphans will have birth certificates by next week.
Several children have no proof of their date of birth, due to which they have been facing problems, including admission in schools. They are not getting the benefits of passport also.
There are four orphanages in the district and over 400 children are living in them. Out of this, 95 children don’t have any record of birth.
PR Nath, general secretary of MDD Bal Bhawan, Phoosgarh, said he had to run from pillar to post for the birth certificate of these children.
Under the banner of a Confederation of Non-Governmental Child Care Institutions, they had submitted a memorandum to the DC in the beginning of this year to highlight the problem faced by them, he said.
Deputy Commissioner J Ganesan had directed the officials of the Health Department to constitute a board of doctors to ascertain the age and date of birth of these children.
