Q.I am in the final year of BTech (mechanical) and have got a placement offer in a big manufacturing company. I am a man of few words and have very few friends. I am not at all confident about my communication skills and expectations of my employer. What are the dos & don’ts to be successful in career?

— Pawan Goyal

A. Do not get carried away by your surroundings. It is not possible for everyone to be talkative; you need not to be expert in all the behavioural aspects. I have seen many reserved people being successful in their careers. Actually, one has to be a good listener to be a successful communicator. Almost every company expects a fresh recruit to be systematic, disciplined and sincere. One should be a team player, be full of innovative ideas, have the courage to take up challenges and should be able to share/explain one’s viewpoint. You must have faith and confidence in yourself, the rest will fall into place. One more thing which will be very helpful in life "always speak the truth”.

Q.I am 30 years old and am working as a clerk in a nationalised bank. I am not satisfied with my financial condition. My parents want me to get married but I feel I am not ready for this responsibility and want to improve my qualification and job prospects.

Can I join some courses along with my job? — Jaspal Singh

A. First of all you should not compare yourself with others as situations and circumstances are different for different people. It looks like you do not have very good communication with your parents otherwise this small issue would’ve been easily resolved. You must explain your situation to your parents as soon as possible. Must remember in this whole world if anybody thinks and prays for your better life it’s your parents. I know many friends of mine got married at the age of 34/35 and its okay. You can join MBA by distance education which can be done along with a job. After this you can apply within your bank or other banks for an opening of a better position. Remember that to be successful you should just compete with yourself and try to do better your best.
