Ludhiana, September 1
An overwhelming number of participants (over 700) turned up to compete in various track and field events. They as well as officials braved rain on the opening day of the Open Ludhiana District Athletics Championship, being organised at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.
It continued to pour heavily most of the time, however, proceedings on the day one went on as per schedule as over two dozen events were completed. The organisers, District Athletics Association, Ludhiana, faced hardships to conduct different games in adverse weather conditions.
In the women’s section, Manpreet Kaur of Guru Hargobind Girls College, Sudhar, emerged as the fastest runner, by winning gold medal in the 100 metre sprint. Vipinjeet and Sukhwinder Kaur secured second and third position, respectively.
In the grueling 10,000 metre race for boys (U-20 category), Vikas Chand from Bahadurke finished ahead of others to bag top honours while Kishan Raj Singh of Arya Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, followed him at the second place and Jatio of Satish Chander Dhawan Government College, Ludhiana, had to contend with the third position.
