Deputy Commissioner Isha Kalia had to spend an hour pursuing the parents of Dalit youth Bhim Tank to accept Rs 10 lakh as financial assistance which Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had announced last evening.
The parents of Bhim Tank and Gurjant Singh Janta had yesterday staged a dharna outside the CMs residence in Chandigarh as the state government had not released any financial assistance even after three months of the barbaric murder of Bhim (27) and the murderous assault on his associate, Gurjant Singh alias Janta Lahoria, at liquor baron Shiv Lal Doda’s farm house in Ramsara village near here on December 11.
Later, the families escorted by Congress leader Sunil Jakhar met Badal. The CM reportedly expressed his sympathy with them and asked Kalia to visit the house of Bhim and give a cheque of Rs 10 lakh besides arranging a government job for the family. Badal had also assured to help to Gurjant’s parents who had reportedly spent Rs 15 lakh on his treatment at Amritsar.
The DC arrived in Sant Nagar today afternoon and walked through narrow streets to reach Bhim’s house along with civil and police officials.
BJP state secretary Sandeep Rinwa slammed the state government for the delay in compensation. The family will not accept the cheque unless a challan is presented against the accused in the mandatory 90 days which ends on March 13, he asserted.
Kapoor Chand Tank, father of Bhim endorsed what Rinwa said.
