Two arrested for blackmailing Mullanpur jeweller

In case of blackmailing of a Mullanpur jeweller, the police have arrested two accused here.

One accused, Shavinder Kumar, alias Rinku, was arrested today, while his accomplice Vishal Nagpal was arrested yesterday. Nagpal has been sent on two-day police remand.

The other two accused, Amit Sharma, a local leader of the Shiv Sena and Santosh, alias Khushi, who had threatened the victim of registering false rape case against him, are still at large.

Giving details of the case, sub-inspector Navin Pal Singh Lehal, Station House Officer of the Mullanpur Police Station, said the victim, Anil Kumar, was blackmailed by the accused, who had taken Rs 11 lakh from him. After getting the money, they started demanding more following which the victim approached the police.

Lehal said: “Under the conspiracy, Khushi went to Anil Kumar’s jewellery shop at Mullanpur to purchase anklets on January 24. Later, she developed friendly relations with him. On February 7, Rinku came to Anil’s shop and told him that Khushi was going to register a rape case against him and offered help in settling the case in consideration of Rs 15 lakh,” said Lehal.

Under the settlement, Anil gave Rs 11 lakh to the accused to get affidavit from the woman that she would not lodge any complaint against him.

“Later, the accused started demanding Rs 4 lakh more for giving him the affidavit, following which Anil contacted us,” said Lehal.

After an inquiry, the police registered a case under Sections 384, 388, 389, 420, 120-B against the four accused at the Mullanpur Police Station.

Rinku would be produced before the court tomorrow, said Lehal.
