ARM-ed to perfection

On October 10, Star Movies Select HD will take viewers through a very inspirational story that's sure to make you chase your dreams. Directed by Craig Gillespie and screenplay written by Tom McCarthy, Disney's Million Dollar Arm is based on a true story of JB Bernstein, a once-successful sports agent who now finds himself edged out by bigger, slicker competitors. Late one night, while watching cricket being played in India on TV, JB came up with a radical idea — Why not go to India and hunt for the next baseball pitching sensation?

Acting on a hunch that a cricket fast bowler could be turned into a fast pitcher, JB Bernstein, played by Jon Hamm in the film, ends up unearthing two talents Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel, played by Suraj Sharma and Madhur Mittal. Both of them, in spite of having not even heard of the baseball game, end up winning contracts with the major league team — the Pittsburgh Pirates — making it the first time for Indian men to be signed by a professional sports side in the US. Like most good films based on sports, it is not all about the sport. Million Dollar Arm is a family movie set against the backdrop of sports. The movie inspires its viewers with messages that more often than not leave an afterthought. It reiterates the saying — a dream lives in us all and for everyone who said you can’t, show them that you can.
