If you swim regularly to stay in top shape, then you might be happy with a linear, straight line rectangular pool/lap pool in your backyard or rooftop. It’s like you have a pool, but only for yourself. Frankly, it isn’t doing much aesthetically, to beautify your outdoor living space. Neither is it any good for others in your family.

When it comes to selecting a swimming pool, it is best to consider the latest offerings primarily because the cost of land is exorbitant and a pool — just like your home — is for a lifetime.

So how about a pool that is designed in a manner where anyone can enjoy it. A pool, that is much more than just a place to swim?

Including spa-beds or hydrotherapy beds in a pool has caught the fancy of many aqua enthusiasts. With a pool lounge area created with spa beds and a hydrotherapy massage system, the pool provides a complete rejuvenating experience. One is not expected to know or learn swimming to enjoy the calming effect of a hydrotherapy pool.

How are hydrotherapy beds made?

A spa bed having a hydrotherapy system is made of concrete and inside it piping is done to place the nozzles at the desired points. Eight nozzles are placed in each spa bed — two besides each other. Placement is based on anthropometric measurements to give proper massage to calves, thighs, upper and lower back of the users.
These nozzles throw up high pressure air that displaces water along with it to give a massage effect.

The spa bed is finished with tiling.

Tile tales
Since this structure has a lot of curves, the tile choice is best restricted to 20X20 mm besides the fact that these make the spa beds look good. The average depth of water in this entire therapeutic area having spa beds is 1.5 feet. A hydrotherapy pool can also be transformed into a full sensory environment with the use of special lighting and sound system.

Aesthetic appeal
When designing such pools,  keep in mind the following:
  • The pool should conform to international standards for water quality as well as safety. From lighting to fixtures, every component should be chosen thoughtfully. On the energy front, the pool should be very efficient. The filtration system should be, considered in a manner that the electricity cost is considerably reduced; along with LED lights being used throughout.
  • The lighting, green-scape and hard-scape should blend seamlessly, with the total pool area making it an outdoor recreational experience and not just separate elements of a pool.
  • Water sheets and jets should be placed strategically to add to the overall beauty.

Cost and maintenance

Generally, a hydrotherapy area with spa beds is a part of a pool itself. Construction of a spa bed would cost you around Rs 80,000 each. And normally, a family pool in the backyard (24X12ft) accommodating a hydrotherapy system would cost around Rs 6 lakh with an approximate AMC of Rs 6000.
