Lahore: More than 1,400 Sikhs from India on Friday celebrated Baisakhi in Hassan Abdal, a town in Pakistan’s Punjab province famous for one of the most sacred sites of Sikhism. Officials of the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) and the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) also took part in the festivities. ETPB Chairman Siddiqul Farooq inaugurated the festival. He said the ETPB was establishing Guru Nanak University in Nankana Sahib and Gandhara University in Taxila. “The federal Higher Education Commission has allocated Rs 1 billion for each project. The construction will begin soon,” he said, reiterating that the people of both countries wanted peace. Devotees thronged Gurdwara Punja Sahib at Hassan Abdal to mark the celebrations. The Indian Sikhs will also visit Gurdwara Janamsthan, Nankana Sahib; Gurdwara Sacha Sauda, Farooqabad; Gurdwara Kartarpur, Narowal; and Gurdwara Dera Sahib, Lahore.
