Call to ban trucks on Shimla road during school hours

Activists of the All-Uttarakhand Parents’ Association held a protest at the SP (Traffic) office here today. They had been demanding a ban on the entry of heavy vehicles on Shimla Bypass Road during the school hours to ensure schoolchildren’s safety.

They said trucks and dumpers move at a high speed on this route, which could be fatal for commuters, especially students. “Many people have lost their lives due to rash driving. Despite complaining so many times, no action has been taken by the police. It has become necessary to prohibit the entry of heavy vehicles during school hours, so that road mishap risk can be lowered,” said Neeraj Singhal, president of the All Uttarakhand Parent’s Association.

Singhal demanded removal of encroachments from footpaths and development of parking spots. He also sought deployment of traffic personnel near the schools. “If our demands are not fulfilled, we will be forced to launch a protest against the police,” he warned.

Vasudev Jakhmola, Sudesh Uniyal, Arif Khan, Nagendra Kunwar and Naveen Lingwal were among the protesters.
