An intensive enrolment drive has been launched in the villages to stem the decline in the number of students admitted to government schools. Various methods are being adopted to persuade the parents to admit their wards in government schools.

In Anipura village, panchayat members embarked on a door-to-door campaign for the cause. Vijay Pal, sarpanch, said, “The teachers approached us to help them in improving the enrolment in the government school lest it is closed,” adding that poor education in government schools has prompted several parents to send their children to private schools in other villages.

Freebies have been advertised, including free admission, books, dress, food and bags, for students at the government senior secondary school in Agroha village to entice the parents.

Some are using the social media to showcase the extent of effort they are ready to put in. Dr Ajay ‘Manav’, acting principal, Government Senior Secondary School, Mandola, Rewari district, has posted pictures on Facebook walking barefoot door-to-door, distributing pamphlets until 1,000 students were admitted to the school.

AS Mann, additional director, education department, said teams comprising members of the school staff had been formed to visit every house for registration of children.

“We are also organising seminars, taking help of the village panchayats to improve the strength in the government schools,” he said.

Admitting shortage of teachers as one of the reasons for declining strength in government schools, he said the process to fill 9,455 posts of JBT teachers and post graduate teachers was under way.
