With the improving job prospects in the construction industry, civil engineering courses are again the top three preferences of students who are
seeking admissions in the academic session 2016-17 in city engineering
institutes.
As per the records of the Joint Admission Committee (JAC), PEC University of Technology, which is leading in admitting students in the first round
of counselling, has already admitted 100 students
for BE civil engineering this year.
The opening rank of the student who got admission in civil in PEC was 9,564. Another institute, Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology, admitted 57 students under civil engineering and the opening rank for it was 32,798.
The course which leads in the preference list of the students is computer science and engineering in all six engineering institutes for which the JAC is conducting centralised counselling. The PEC University of Technology, which is the first preference among the students, have admitted the highest number of students during the first counselling, which is 607 in eight branches.
PEC Registrar Manoj Jindal said the civil engineering stream was picking up among the youth with the increase in number of job opportunities in the past few years.
He said earlier, the civil engineering was on the fourth or fifth preference of the students but now, it was on the second or third number during the
counselling of fresh students recently.
Professor Sunil, CCET, Computer Science and Engineering Department, said computer science was on the top preference of the students because of the huge job prospective in both government and private sectors.
Amrinder Pal Singh, UIET assistant professor, said the craze for information technology among the students was declining for the past two years due to limited placement.
Counselling was conducted for six institutes namely University Institute of Engineering and Technology (Panjab University), Dr SS Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (PU), PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology, Sector 26, SSG Regional Centre, Hoshiarpur, and Chandigarh College of Architecture.
