Conference ends at zoology dept

A two-day national conference, Leveraging biodiversity for translational therapeutic research, concluded at the Department of Zoology, Panjab University, on Friday. The day began with participants from different parts of the country presenting their posters. The technical session had Prof HS Banyal, Vice-Chancellor, Abhilashi University, Mandi (HP); Prof Ishan Patro, Head, School of Studies in Zoology and School of Studies in Neuroscience, Jiwaji University, Gwalior; Dr Ashish, Scientist E, Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh; and Prof RC Sobti, VC, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow (UP), as speakers. Prof Banyal spoke about the benefits of using different plant derivatives while treating malaria patients. 

Mehak of SD College is BCom topper 

Mehak Mittal, a student of GGDSD College, Sector 32, has stood first in BCom, Semester I, results of which were declared by Panjab University. She scored 541 marks out of 650. Diksha Jain, also a student of the college, bagged the third position. Overall, SD college students claimed five of the top 10 positions in the commerce discipline. In BBA, Semester I, Sanya Arora of SD College came second in the university. Principal Dr Bhushan K Sharma congratulated the staff and students and urged them to continue with the good work.

Econophoria 

The planning forum of the Department of Economics at GGDSD College held its annual academic-cum-cultural fest, Econophoria, on Friday. The event saw a galaxy of events such as quiz, elocution, ad-mad, paper presentation, photography, group discussion, choreography, poster making etc. As many as 14 colleges of the tricity participated in the programme.

Lecture held

The Electrical Engineering Department of the PEC University of Technology held a lecture in the memory of Prof J K Arora, a former faculty member of the department. The key speaker, Prof BG Fernandes, Head of Department, Electrical Engineering Department, IIT Bombay, delivered a lecture on “Rural Electrification: Challenges and Possible Solutions”. PEC Director Dr Manoj K Arora, PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Grover and PEC Electrical Engineering Department Head Dr Tarlochan Kaur were present on the occasion. 

Farewell party

The Department of Computer Applications of Post-Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 11, bid adieu to outgoing PGDCA and BCA-III students during a function on Friday. BCA-II students presented a kaleidoscope of dance and music. 

Special lecture

The Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA), Punjab and Chandigarh (UT) Regional Branch, in collaboration with the Department of Public Administration, Panjab University, on Friday organised a special lecture “Ethical and Affordable Health Care in India”. Dr Ram Kumar, convener, Society for Promotion of Ethical & Affordable Healthcare (SPEAK), delivered the lecture. 

Law fest

On the second day of the Arguendo’ 2016, a national academic law fest being organised by the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), PU, semi-final rounds of the All-India Gurcharan Singh Tulsi criminal law annual moot court competition, preliminary and quarterfinal rounds of the 5th UILS national client counseling competition and two literary events — Spell Bee and AD Mad show — were organised. 

Students take Pledge for cleanliness

Panjab University students, research scholars, teachers, employees and officials on Friday took a ‘Swachhta Pledge’ under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover released a DVD of the activities organised by the university on the campus and adopted villages. — TNS
