Blood donations, processions and cultural programmes marked the 124th birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar across Kumaon today. Several organisations linked to the Ambedkar school of thought today organised processions and seminars and emphasised the need to follow Ambedkar’s way of struggle for the poor and Dalit community in the country today.

In the Pithoragarh district headquarters, on Dr BR Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, the Sanyukt Sanjojan Samiti today took out a procession in the town. The activists assembled at the Zila Panchayat hall, where several Dalit leaders including those from the BSP, BAMCEF and Ambedkar Manch besides leaders from the BJP, Congress and some other parties gathered to pay their respects to the Dalit leader and architect of the Indian Constitution. “We will have to struggle to make the country run on principles laid down by Dr Ambedkar in the Constitution as some people have started downplaying these values,” said Rajesh Kumar, district chief of the BSP.

The Congress organised a seminar at Seemant hostel and talked about Ambedkar’s relevance at this juncture of a turning point in the country. “We will have to return to the thoughts of Dr Ambedkar to make the country stable from political point of view as Dr Ambedkar has given valuable thoughts of parity on the lines of equality before law,” said Jagat Singh Khati, Congress general secretary and president of the Nagar Palika Parishad Pithoragarh.
