Medical experts raised concern over the use of phenyl and other disinfectants for their adverse impact on health. The experts raised the issue while interacting with the public at Hospital Multi-Speciality Centre, Panchkula, today. Dr Suresh K Aggarwal said, “The phenyl used to mop floors and scrub bathrooms and kitchens contains chemical compounds called phenols, the carbolic acid. These corrosive substances are toxic and directly affect central nervous system such as heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and blood vessels. Phenyl poisoning can occur when phenols come in contact with the skin or eyes or inhaled or swallowed.”
Dr Arun Girdhar said that phenyl poisoning required immediate medical attention. In cases of skin contamination, one should swab the skin with water and change swab frequently. “If eyes come into contact with phenyl, wash them with lots of water for at least 15 minutes. If the liquid is swallowed, one should not attempt to induce vomiting or dilute the phenol as that would increase its absorption rate,” he said.
