Fabulous 5
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: How can we forget Rahul, Anjali, and Tina, played by Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani, respectively? This movie introduced us to branded outfits, cool schools, basketball games, and glamourous heroines, thanks to Karan Johar and Manish Malhotra. It was also a time when heroines did not have to be impossibly skinny. And our favourite part is best friends becoming lovers! You will laugh, cry, and sing along while watching it even today.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge: Aditya Chopra's directorial debut made Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol a beloved on-screen jodi and superstars out of them. This movie has set the benchmark for romantic movies and inspired generations of actors and filmmakers. Every second girl is absolutely charmed by Raj's antics and wants a guy like him!
Rangeela: This was a realistic movie about the film industry before making realistic movies became the in-thing to do. Aamir Khan wowed us all with his free-spirited tapori act and Urmila Matondkar was a complete darling as a simple, middle-class girl with stars in her eyes whose filmy dreams come true and she gets to be with her true love. This was a fairytale in true Bombay and Ram Gopal Varma style.
Dil Chahta Hai: Farhan Akhtar's meticulously planned directorial debut has redefined all things urban, uber, and cool for generations to come and re-launched the career of Saif Ali Khan. The coming-of-age comedy also introduced contemporary hair-styling to Bollywood, thanks to Adhuna Bhabani Akhtar.
Kal Ho Naa Ho: No one can cheer us up and fill us with joie de vivre quite like Shah Rukh Khan can. Set and shot entirely in New York and catering to the NRI audience in a big way, Nikhil Advani's directorial debut was the right mix of sentimentality and humour. Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan made a cute couple and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is melodious even today.
