The women’s wing of Sarv Jatiya Sarv Khap Mahapanchayat (SJSKM) has decided to come out to support and motivate Muslim women to get united against the practice of triple talaq.

“Women deserve their basic rights which are given to them by the Constitution of India. The triple talaq system, a practice under which a Muslim man can divorce his wife by pronouncing the word thrice, is unconstitutional as it is in sheer violation of fundamental rights,” said Santosh Dahiya, SJSKM women’s wing president.

“The practice of triple talaq is unfair as a man can disown his wife and get away from responsibilities easily. A divorce should not take place without the permission of the wife. This form of talaq, also known as instant divorce, is banned in over 20 Islamic nations. There should be no place for this practice in India,” she said.

“The women’s wing of the SJSKM has been working in the field of woman empowerment and against female foeticide, honour killing, domestic violence and purdah for several years. It has been decided that we will motivate Muslim women to come forward and get united against this practice,” she added.

“The SKSKM and the Akhil Bhartiya Mahila Shakti Manch will launch a campaign in Haryana in January. District-wise meetings will be held across the state to apprise them of their rights so that they can raise their voice against this practice,” said the physical education associate professor with Kurukshetra University.

“Besides this, the women’s wing will work on more campaigns in woman empowerment simultaneously. A large number of women have been elected as panches and sarpanches this time around, but their husbands, fathers-in-law or other male members are calling the shots, which is a matter of concern,” Dahiya said.

“After the Haryana Government brought about the educational criteria, educated women were elected. They should take decisions instead of depending on someone else. The women’s wing and manch will motivate women panches and sarpanches to take decisions,” she further said.
