First reverse shoulder replacement surgery in the north region was successfully performed a 72-year-old patient at SPS Hospitals by Dr HS Gill, Head of the Joint Replacement and Orthopaedic Department.
According to Dr Gill, the surgery was performed for the first time in the region. “Reverse shoulder replacement is the new treatment for shoulder fractures in elderly, in cases of arthritis of shoulder with muscle tears or in certain complex shoulder problems and in those where the normal shoulder replacement has failed,” said Dr Gill.
The surgery was performed on a 72-year-old woman from Patiala. She was having shoulder pain for the past 8 to 10 years and had tried all sorts of treatments but to no avail. Her shoulder movement was lost and even a slight shoulder movement caused pain. She was unable to sleep for hours because of severe pain and her activities of daily living were comprised. Now, after two months post reverse shoulder replacement surgery, she has regained her shoulder movement and has no pain.
