Puppeteering and puppet making can be a brilliant art form for enhancing fun and creativity for children and can be an excellent teaching aid in educational institutes to tell stories. This was stated by Umesh Kumar, a puppet maker.
He was in the city to participate in the Kahaani Festival, which concluded at Delhi Public School yesterday.
He taught students to make puppets through socks and paper. Contrary to popular perception, puppet making can be easy. He taught the students to make puppets at a puppet making workshop. For making sock puppets, he cut a sock from the front and pasted paper inside and out to make a mouth. Then he pasted small balls on top to make the eyes and a silver paper to make brows. The students, who enjoyed making puppets, said it was easy to make a sock puppet.
“We tell stories through the use of puppet. Traditional and folk stories to complex stories can be told through puppets. It can be a great teaching and learning aid,” a teacher said. Umesh also taught paper puppets and professional-looking puppets that are used on television.
A teacher said puppet shows should not only be more common nowadays, but also puppet making should be encouraged among youngsters to generate their interest in the art of using and making puppets and telling interesting stories through them.
