He urged people not to throw polythene bags, ritual material, leftovers and effluents in the Ganga. “The Ganga is called Holy mother but we ourselves are polluting it,” he added.

Social activist JP Baduni said even religious items and material left after rituals were being thrown into the Ganga. “The government alone can’t clean the river without first creating awareness among people and their involvement. Ashrams, dharmashals, hotels, industries, pilgrims, tourists and local residents all need ensure that no garbage, sewage, filth or industrial effluents and pollutants are thrown into the sacred river,” said Badoni.

Gopal Giri, Munna Lal Thakur, Amit Lal, Prem Pal Yadav, Vikki Yadav, Avdesh Bahadur, Munna, Sonu Kashyap, Shiv Tomar, and Vinod Dhal Chand cleaned the Ganga ghat and the Pantdeep area.

Maa Ganga Aahwan Akhada has been holding the cleanliness drive every Thursday for the past 29 weeks and generating awareness among people about making the river pollution and garbage free.
