Governor Dr KK Paul today paid tributes to Swami Dayanand Saraswati on the occasion of his first death anniversary at the Dayanand Ashram at Muni-ki-Reti in Rishikesh.
The Governor released a special postal cover in the swami’s memory. He also unveiled the ‘Pravesh Dwar’ of Swami Dayanand Nagar which is the new name given to Purani Shisham Jhadi where the ashram is located.
Paul said the release of the postal cover and the renaming of the area after the swami were the befitting ways of paying tributes to the saint who spent his life in understanding and teaching Vedanta across the globe.
He said the swami’s deep scholarship and assimilation of Vedanta made him a great teacher. Under his guidance, many centres for Vedanta study had been founded around the world. Besides, Swami Dayanand initiated and supported various humanitarian efforts, including the establishment of the All-India Movement for Seva which is serving people in remote areas of the country in the sphere of education and healthcare.
The Governor spoke about the swami’s early days as Natarajan, when he was drawn to Indian philosophy, particularly the Advaita school, and was influenced by Swami Chinmayananda from whom he began taking Vedanta lessons. It was in 1962 that he took Sanyas and became Swami Dayanand Saraswati.
Paul said people should resolve to keep alive the rich Vedantic traditions propagated by Swami. “These are eternal and universal ideas and thoughts that transcend the boundaries of countries, time and religions. India has spread the message of peace in the world and will continue to do so,” he said .
He thanked Uday Krishna, Post Master General, Uttarakhand, for the special postal cover.
