Gurkanwal back in Congress fold
Patiala: A couple of days after she joined the BJP, Gurkanwal Kaur, daughter of former Chief Minister late Beant Singh, rejoined the Congress on Tuesday. She was welcomed back by Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh. Amarinder said Gurkanwal had some grudges, which the party had addressed. She said she was happy to be back in her political family. A former minister, Gurkanwal was elected MLA from Jalandhar Cantt in 2002. She is the sister of ex-minister Tej Prakash Singh and aunt of MLA Gurkirat Kohli and MP Ravneet Bittu. tns
SAD picks Tikka from Amritsar South
Chandigarh: The SAD on Tuesday named Gurpartap Singh Tikka as the party candidate from the Amritsar South seat. The party has now declared all its 94 candidates. The seat was represented by Inderbir Singh Bolaria, who resigned from the SAD last year and later joined the Congress. Bolaria was named the Congress candidate from Amritsar South earlier in the day. tns
Cong MLA files papers as Independent
Jalandhar: Congress MLA from Banga Tarlochan Singh Soondh filed nomination papers as an Independent from the constituency on Tuesday. He organised a gathering at his office before marching to the office of the SDM-cum-Returning Officer about 2 km away. Congress candidate and former MP Satnam Kainth and AAP nominee Harjot Kaur also filed their nominations at Banga. In Nawanshahr, SAD candidate Jarnail Singh Wahid and Congress nominee Angad Saini were among those who filed papers. TNS
SGPC ex-general secy joins AAP
Banga: Former SGPC general secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, who had resigned from SAD in protest against desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib in October 2015, joined Aam Aadmi Party at Banga on Tuesday. Bhaur said he was disturbed with the “dictatorial” policies of the Badal government. Bhaur said he was impressed with the honest and transparent policies of the party. Kejriwal appointed him senior vice-president of the state unit. OC
Cong’s Deepa files 2 sets of papers
Sangrur: After denial of ticket from Sunam, state Congress general secretary Rajinder Deepa may force official Congress candidate Daman Thind Bajwa to spend sleepless nights in the days to come as he filed his nomination on Tuesday. Deepa filed two sets of nomination papers before the Returning Officer at Sunam. A set was filed by him as an independent candidate while another set was filed as Congress candidate without any authorisation letter. OC
Gangster Rocky’s sister files papers
Fazilka: Sister of slain gangster-turned-politician Jaswinder Singh Bhullar, alias Rocky, Rajdeep Kaur filed her nomination papers as an independent candidate from the Fazilka Assembly constituency on Tuesday. She held an impressive election rally in local Shastri Chowk in which a large number of people most of them from the rural lower strata participated. Former BSP Jaunpur MP Dhananjay Singh, considered to be Rocky's mentor, Sanjay Chautala, son of Om Hitler, strongman of Sirsa, considered to be close associate of Rocky, also attended the rally. Rocky's mother Harminder Kaur held senior ruling party leaders responsible for Rocky's murder as he was emerging a future leader of Fazilka. Rocky had lost to incumbent Health Minister Surjit Kumar Jyani in 2012 election from Fazilka by 1,692 votes only. OC
Harsimrat plays emotional card in Malout
Malout: Addressing a rally in favour of SAD candidate from Malout Darshan Singh Kotfatta, Union Minister and Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Tuesday told the voters that this constituency had a special place for her late mother-in-law, Bibi Surinder Kaur Badal. In her address, she said Malout had always got attention of the Badal family. “All development works in the town and villages have been executed by the SAD-BJP government. You people won't be even remembering what the Congress did for this constituency,” said Harsimrat. TNS
