Host Gurukul Kangri University made it to quarterfinals along with Artillery Centre, Nashik, SAI, Sonepat, and BEG in the 85th Swami Shraddhanand All-India Hockey Tournament being played at Swami Shraddhanand Hockey Stadium at Gurukul Kangri University today.
In the first prequarterfinal, Artillery Centre, Nashik, won against NCR Jhansi with a big margin of 6-1. Nashik players scored six goals consecutively, while Jhansi scoring its lone goal in last minute of the game. Ajeet Pal scored a hat trick while Jhansi team’s lone goal scorer was Badshah Alam.
In the second prequarterfinal, UP Brothers lost against SAI, Sonepat, 1-3. In the third prequarterfinal, BEG defeated FCI through penalty shootout 5-3 as both sides remained tied at 1-1 after the stipulated time.
Host Gurukul Kangri University showed their prowess in the fourth prequarterfinal by outplaying Banaras team 4-0. Sunny scored a hat trick with two penalty corners and 1 field goal to take Gurukul Kangri University to quarterfinals.
Earlier, chief guest for the first prequarterfinal, Surjeet Singh Pawar, Deputy Commandant of the Indian Reserve Battalion, met the Nashik and Jhansi team players, urging them to play with team spirit and showcase a fair play.
Ranipur-BHEL legislator Aadesh Chauhan was the chief guest for the second prequarterfinal match, who mentioned the recent Junior Asian Championship victory by young Indian hockey team as a mark of popularity and talent of Indian hockey players.
University Vice-Chancellor Professor Surendra Kumar, Registrar Professor Vinod Kumar, Professor PC Joshi, organising committee president Prof RKS Dagar, secretary Dr Ajay Malik, Dr Shiv Kumar Chauhan, Rajeev Tyagi, Rajneesh Bharadwaj, Ranjit Kumar, Yashpal Singh Rana, Jai Narayan Tyagi, Navin Kumar, Amit, Arvind, Subash, Santosh Rai, Dr Kapil Mishra, Dushyant Singh Rana, Bajrang Saxena, Pramod, Rajesh Kakkad, Vinod Pradeep and Anuj among others were present.
