Jind, May 4
Residents of the district’s Kherkhedi village performed ‘kua pujan’ on the birth of nine girls today.
Not only this, the panchayat spread the message of communal harmony by inviting mothers from different communities.
As per tradition, the custom of “kua pujan” is performed on the birth of boys.
It is not for the first time that villagers celebrated the birth of girls. The Kherkhedi panchayat has been taking several initiatives for creating awareness among people against female foeticide.
The gender ratio in the village has improved. “In 2014, nine girls were born against 15 boys. Last year, 15 girls were born against five boys. And this year, five girls and three boys have taken birth so far,” sarpanch Rajinder Singh said, adding “girls are equal to boys”.
The panchayat invited mothers of different communities, as Singh said, villagers believed that being a mother of a girl was an honour for a woman. “The panchayat makes villagers pledge against female foeticide in a temple. If every village adopts our concept, the menace of female foeticide can be curbed,” the sarpanch added.
Recently, the Health Department identified 10 villages in Jind district having gender ratio below 500.
