In protest against the proposed amendments to the Advocate Act, reportedly by the Bar Council of India (BCI), the Karnal Bar Association (KBA) suspended work on the call of the Delhi and NCR Bar associations.

KBA president Deepak Sachdeva said as per the proposed amendment, licences of advocates would be suspended if they go on strike. Besides, a penalty of Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh would be imposed on the Bar Association.

It was an attempt to suppress the voice of advocates, he said, adding that the BCI should rethink the proposal and cancel it in the larger interest of advocates.

Nirmal Singh Virk, former president of KBA, demanded that the proposed amendment should not be implemented.
