An 11-year-old student of 6th standard, Gurmehar Singh is an active supporter of Gurmeet Singh Kular, a SAD candidate from the Atam Nagar constituency. Gurmehar is Kular’s son, who is telling his each and every friend in the school and locality to further ask their parents to support his father.
Apart from Gurmehar, Kular’s wife Jaspreet Kaur, his daughters Pawneet (21) and Amneet Kaur(15) and son Jasmeet Singh (21) are leaving no stone unturned to garner support for him.
Jasmeet, who is from IT background, has been spearheading his father’s campaign on the social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp. He has been sharing political activities of his father with groups online. “I have formulated a unique poll strategy for my father and named it ‘Tree’. I ask my 10 friends to make sure votes of their parents and relatives go to my father, and each of those 10 friends are further connecting to their friends with the same message. I am growing a tree which is expected to expand with each passing day,” said Jasmeet, who has just completed his B-Tech degree.
Jasmeet also spares time for his family business, so his father could spend much time campaigning.
Kular’s daughter Pawaneet said though his father was new to politics, he is the president of the Federation of Industrial and Commercial Organisation (FICO), a prominent industrial body. “My father was dedicated to the welfare of industry. He will obviously bring better future to the constituency if voted to power,” she added.
The only drawback of her father stepping into politics is that earlier he used to take them all for shopping and outing frequently. Still, they are contented, his daughter said.
Kular’s wife said the day when her husband sought her advice on whether to go for the elections or not, she categorically said “yes” only after paying several thoughts to his decision. Now as her husband has entered politics, she has started meeting the local people to garner votes for him.
“Since my husband is now contesting the elections, he has been spending his full time in the constituency. Sometimes, he overlooks his family affairs but we understand it’s because of his busy schedule. Now, he wakes up at 6 am and sometime returns home after midnight. Even I and my children are awake till he (Kular) returns home. We then ask him to share his full day experience with us,” she said.
“Now, we all family members remain updated with political news. We read all news stories in depth and even hold discussions at home,” Kular’s wife adds.
About his new innings, Kular said: “My wife and children are taking more pain than I am. They have been sharing my responsibilities to a larger extent. My wife wakes me up early morning and waits for me till midnight for dinner,” he adds.
